The Pandemic as an Opportunity to Reshape the Future for Global Families

The Pandemic as an Opportunity to Reshape the Future for Global Families

The Covid-Crisis is not just a challenge, but also an opportunity to start fresh by reshaping our society, our ambitions and our relationships. While many parents have felt overwhelmed these past few weeks and young people isolated from peers, author Arundhati Roy reminds us that pandemics are also an opportunity for renewal: “Historically, pandemics have forced humans to break with the past and imagine the world anew. This one is no different. It is a portal, a gateway, between one world and the next.” What positive strategies can we put into place now to ensure a healthier tomorow? “Historically, pandemics have forced humans to break with the past and imagine the world anew. Helping our Teens Handle COVID-19: It’s all about R-E-S-P-E-C-T

Helping our Teens Handle COVID-19: It’s all about R-E-S-P-E-C-T

I have been getting lots of questions from parents and caregivers about how to help tweens and teens handle online schooling, social distancing or exam cancellations. Based on my conversations with teens and parents around the globe, I have put together some top tips (and a very simple way to remember them). Recall that old Aretha Franklin song? When it comes to COVID-19 and young people, let’s have a little RESPECT: Routines-maintain it, Expectations-lower them, Strengths-build them, Positive Behavior-model it, Engagement-encourage it, Cheers (or praise)-give it and Technology-embrace it.

Vanquishing Vaping

Vanquishing Vaping

Vaping is getting our attention. According to a recent Journal of the American Medical Association study, nearly 28% of high schoolers and 10% of middle schoolers report vaping. Vaping is the inhaling of a vapor created by an electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) or other devices. The e-cigarettes or ‘vapes’ come in many different shapes and sizes but most are small- some even look like USB flash drives. Teens tell me that is particularly common among 12-16-year-old students since it is small, discrete, relatively odourless, and easy to hide in their backpack and use in a bathroom or classroom. The nicotine in vaping can be very addictive which in time can affect brain development, memory, concentration, self-control and mood.

Beating Holiday Stress

Beating Holiday Stress

The December holidays are one of my favorite times. However, it can also be stressful for global families-juggling travel, meeting relatives and friends, and balancing different customs and traditions. How can you keep calm and ensure you and your kids make the most of your holiday experience? My quick tips: Embrace your family’s unique customs, maintain routines, embrace focus on sharing experiences over buying gifts, don’t overdo it, and take time to express gratitude.
